For over a millennium, the area known as Encino was the home of a massive California live oak known as the Encino Oak Tree. It is possible that Encino is named because of this particular tree. (Encino is the Spanish word for “evergreen” or “holm oak.”) Today there is a monument to the great tree at the corner of Ventura Boulevard and Louise Avenue where the Encino Oak once stood.

Many young professionals and retirees live in Encino and residents tend to have moderate political views. The public schools in Encino are rated above average.

Encino starts at the foot of the Santa Monica Mountains, just north of Bel Air and Brentwood, with Sherman Oaks to the east, Reseda to the north, and Tarzana to the west. This is an inviting, settled community of quiet, almost rural, streets with upscale homes on generously sized lots. Encino has a small town feel where amenities are within walking distance. The main area for shopping and dining is Ventura Blvd., between White Oak and Balboa, an area called the Encino Commons. Some consider Encino Commons to be the Miracle Mile of the San Fernando Valley. Well south of the boulevard and up the hillside, you’ll find the Royal Oaks neighborhood area of Encino which is home to larger high-end homes and estate properties.
